Onderzoek en documentatie van taal en cultuur in Nederland

Activiteiten Nederlandse Etnologie

 

Het jaar 2012 stond vooral in het teken van de nieuw opgestarte NWO- en KNAW-projecten in het eLaboratorium Orale Cultuur. Binnen de NWO-Catch projecten Folktales As Classifiable Text (FACT) en Cognition Guided Interoperability between Collections of Musical Heritage (Cogitch) worden tools ontwikkeld om de grote hoeveelheden oraal materiaal in de Nederlandse Liederenbank en de Nederlandse Volksverhalenbank nog beter te ontsluiten. In het KNAW-Computational Humanities project Tunes & Tales wordt fundamenteel onderzoek gedaan naar de mondelinge overlevering van zowel liedmelodieën als volksverhalen. Het project Witchcraft+ werd afgesloten met onder andere een crowdsourcing-tool voor het invoeren van muzieknotatie bij liederen in de Nederlandse Liederenbank.
 
Voorts werden drie aanvragen toegekend: de interne projecten Nederlandsheid (Roodenburg) en Local Language/Local Culture (Cornips & Stengs). In het verlengde van het laatste project werd ook de aanvraag voor een internationale NIAS themagroep gehonoreerd: The Construction of Local Identities through Cultural Practices.
 
In de zomer verscheen Nieuw in Nederland: Feesten en rituelen in verandering. Deze bundel onder redactie van Irene Stengs levert een bijdrage aan het publieke debat over immigranten, cultuur en nationalisme. Het boek stelt het idee ter discussie dat in Nederland migrantenculturen bestaan met elk hun eigen traditionele feesten en rituelen. De onderliggende aanname dat migranten vastomlijnde gemeenschappen met eigen culturen vormen, wordt aan de hand van etnografisch onderzoek weerlegd.

Verder vonden er drie Meertens Ethnology Lectures plaats, waarvan twee in Spui 25. In juni sprak professor Elisabeth Timm over erfgoed en populaire genealogie, in september professor Leonard Norman Primiano over katholicisme en medialisering in de Verenigde Staten en in oktober professor Ciraj Rassool over erfgoed en burgerschap in Zuid-Afrika. In oktober spraken 21 wetenschappers uit Europa en de Verenigde Staten met elkaar over talrijke aspecten van de vroegmoderne zangcultuur tijdens de Dutch Songs On Line conferentie Identities, Intertextuality and Performance in Song Culture 1500-1800.
