Meertens Ethnology Lecture: Cultural Heritage
door dr. Dorothy Noyes (Ohio State University, USA)
Plaats: Symposiumzaal, Meertens Instituut
Tijd: 15.30u
Op dinsdag 9 december 2008 houdt Dr. Dorothy Noyes, Associate Professor of English and Director of the Center for Folklore Studies, Ohio State University, USA de achtste Meertens Ethnology Lecture, onder de titel:

Fairy Tale Economics: Scarcity, Risk, Choice

Abstract: The peasant Märchen of nineteenth century Europe described a world of scarce resources and fierce social competition. Its hero got ahead by keeping a sharp eye out for scant opportunities and by careful investment of whatever capital he or she might have: good looks, quick wits, spare time, or a strong arm. This mixture of anxiety, pedagogy, and wish-fulfillment continues to inform the fairy tales of American mass culture. But the plot undergoes certain characteristic transformations in tandem with economic change. I first explore the late nineteenth century boys’ books of Horatio Alger, explicit rewritings of the European fairy tale written in a period of aggressive economic expansion. Next I show the ubiquity of the fairy-tale plot in late consumer culture in the US, including “chickflicks”, celebrity biography, reality TV shows, and self-help books: but these address not the challenge of scarcity but the challenge of abundance. In the current economic climate, we are no doubt due for another restructuring, not just of the financial system but of the imaginary.

Er is een borrel na afloop
