Biography
Gerrit Bloothooft is a retired guest researcher at the Meertens Institute/NL-Lab and at the Institute for Language Sciences at Utrecht University. He was one of the founders of the Meertens Institute’s online database of Dutch first names and the family name database that is now housed at the Central Bureau for Genealogy. Both databases are based on the names of the entire Dutch population, allowing users to consult the geographical distribution, popularity (for first names, from 1790 onwards) and meaning (where known) of names.
Bloothooft focuses his research on first names because they are the ultimate expression of the identity of the bearer – even though they are given by the parents. This socio-cultural significance applies in particular to current fashion names, which are studied in numerous time-bound onomastic aspects. The unique (scientific) availability of name data for the entire population offers special opportunities for developing and testing models of cultural evolution.
Bloothooft publishes in the international journal Names, of which he is a member of the editorial board, on Neerlandistiek.nl, with more than a hundred contributions on first names, and in Onze Taal.
