Biography

Leonie Cornips is a Sociolinguistics Researcher at NL-Lab/the Meertens Institute. She is also Professor of Language Culture in Limburg at Maastricht University. She studied Dutch Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam. In 1994 she received her PhD from the University of Amsterdam for a dissertation on syntactic variation in the standard Dutch spoken in Heerlen (Limburg). Her research interests include bilingual child language acquisition, multilingualism and identity construction through linguistic practices, and she has recently also focused on animal language, in particular cow language/interaction.

Cornips is a board member of the Landelijke Onderzoeksschool Taalwetenschap (National Research School of Linguistics) and a member of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letteren (Dutch Literary Society). The Limburg portal of the DBNL (Digital Library of Dutch Literature) was completed under her guidance. She has also participated as a researcher in several European projects, including the SAND project, AThEME, COST New Speakers and PARTE. At the moment she is part of the ‘Multilectal Literacy in Education’ project.
