Maya Lane (1992) is a PhD student at the Meertens Institute where she works on the VITALGREENHOUSE ERC project, supervised by Dr. Rebeca Ibáñez Martín. Lane will explore multispecies relations and sustainability in her strand of the larger project. Lane studied Medical Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Amsterdam, and her masters thesis explored the mutliplicities of care when living with chronic vulval pain. As such, Maya’s research interests include chronic illness, crip theory, multispecies relations and the nuacnes of care. Maya has been involved in various projects, including ArtiC, an interdisciplinary working group exploring aesthetic interventions and care at the OLVG West. She has also studied The Gramounce Alternative Masters in Food and Art, and focused on the echoes between planetary health and bodily health, queer ecologies, eating practices and care. Before her appointment at the Meertens Instiute, Maya lectured in Sociology at the University of Amsterdam.
Within her work, Lane finds it important to make academic knowledge as accessible as possible, and engages in feminist care practices throughout her research. Previously, she worked at Just for Kids Law in the UK as a youth advocate and educator where she engaged in supporting and advocating for marginalized young people, particularly young mothers and those on the child protection register.
