The theme of her dissertation was radical ideas in pornographic novels in the Netherlands from 1670 to 1700. Her research now focuses on early-modern cultural history (1500-1850), the history of emotion and smell, the history of knowledge, the cultural economy and digital humanities.
Leemans has previously published works on the history of pornography, financial crises, the book market, translation machinery, imagineering and the early-modern novel. Since 2021 she has been project manager of Odeuropa: Negotiating Olfactory and Sensory Experiences in Cultural Heritage Practice and Research. Leemans is passionate about knowledge utilisation. She gives lectures for a variety of audiences and regularly appears on radio and television and in podcasts. For her, knowledge utilisation is not only about communicating research results, but also about developing new research in collaboration with private and public partners. In her research projects Leemans works together with the financial sector, the fragrance industry, the heritage sector and creative partners. As Principal Investigator of NL-Lab, Leemans brings together experts from different backgrounds to develop new research together – research that is at the heart of society.
