Polifonia

Polifonia is a research project focused on recreating the connections between music, people, places and events from the sixteenth century to the modern day. These findings will be available to everyone as an interconnected global database on the web – a knowledge graph – and will enhance our understanding of European musical heritage.

The Polifonia consortium is an interdisciplinary team of passionate researchers and music lovers: computer scientists, anthropologists and ethnomusicologists, historians of music, linguists, musical heritage archivists, cataloguers and administrators, and creative professionals.

From the Meertens Institute, oral culture researcher Peter van Kranenburg is involved in leading two sub projects: ORGANS and TUNES.

Results

This project is now complete. The results are combined in the Polifonia Web Portal, launched in May 2024, which increases the discoverability of European musical heritage with Linked Open Data and Knowledge Graphs. View the press release here.
