Biografie
Gerrit Bloothooft is gepensioneerd gastonderzoeker bij het Meertens Instituut/NL-Lab en bij het Institute for Language Sciences van de Universiteit Utrecht. Hij stond aan de wieg van de online Nederlandse voornamenbank van het Meertens Instituut en de familienamenbank die nu berust bij het Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie. Beide banken zijn gebaseerd op de namen van de hele Nederlandse bevolking, waarbij geografische verspreiding, populariteit (voor voornamen, vanaf 1790) en betekenis (voor zover bekend) van namen geraadpleegd kunnen worden.
Bloothooft richt zijn onderzoek op het geven van voornamen omdat die bij uitstek een uitdrukking zijn van de identiteit van de drager – ook al worden ze door de ouders gegeven. Die sociaal-culturele betekenis geldt in het bijzonder voor de huidige modenamen die in tal van tijdgebonden naamkundige aspecten worden bestudeerd. De unieke (wetenschappelijke) beschikbaarheid van naamgegevens van de volledige bevolking biedt daarbij bijzondere kansen voor het ontwikkelen en het toetsen van modellen van culturele evolutie.
Bloothooft publiceert in het internationale tijdschrift Names, waarvan hij lid is van de editorial board, op Neerlandistiek.nl met inmiddels meer dan honderd bijdragen over voornamen, en in Onze Taal.
