Film ‘Colored Frequencies’ (2023), door Manpreet Brar

Manpreet Brar is junior onderzoeker bij het Meertens Instituut. Voor haar afstudeerproject van de master visuele antropologie onderzocht ze de dynamiek tussen muziek, religie en cultuur. Dat resulteerde in een film, Colored Frequencies (2023).

Colored Frequencies laat zien hoe verschillende muzikanten en creatievelingen in Amsterdam Zuidoost zich verhouden tot ‘blackness’. Bekijk hier de trailer:

Synopsis Colored Frequencies (EN)

Colored Frequencies shows how various musicians and creatives in Amsterdam Zuidoost negotiate blackness. In a white society, black people often face demands to ‘attune’. They are seen as ‘other’, and as such are expected to embrace majoritarian norms, values and ways of doing. The maker explores to what extent they indeed attune, and how they find their own tunes and frequencies. Quite literally, musicians relate to frequencies in their productions and the film plays with this idea. They can be audible and inaudible, visible and invisible. In the encounter with the maker the creatives reflect on how they perceive anti-racism and how this may influence their creative expressions.

Colored Frequencies invites the viewer to tune into the experiences and lively worlds of the protagonists. Through this musical journey we learn how dimensions such as creativity, religiosity and spirituality relate to how these creatives experience blackness.

Onderzoeksproject INREACH

Bij het Meertens werkt Brar aan het onderzoeksproject INREACH, dat kijkt naar hoe visuele antropologie als onderzoeksmethode kan bijdragen aan het verrijken en diversifiëren van archieven. Ze doet hiervoor opnieuw een audiovisueel onderzoek in Amsterdam Zuidoost, waar de nadruk ligt op de dynamiek tussen muziek en religie.
