Markus Balkenhol (1979) is onderzoeker etnologie bij het Meertens Instituut. Hij studeerde antropologie en Duitse Literatuur aan de Freie Universität Berlin en antropologie aan de University of Auckland. Hij promoveerde in 2014 aan de Vrije Universiteit op een proefschrift over de herdenking van de slavernij in Nederland. In zijn onderzoek houdt hij zich bezig met de antropologie van koloniaal erfgoed, memory politics, en religie. Eerder werkte hij mee aan het NWO project ‘Heritage Dynamics’ (2008-2012) en het HERA project ‘Currents of Faith’, (2013-2016), beide over religie en erfgoed in de Atlantische wereld. Balkenhol was redactielid bij het tijdschrift Etnofoor. Hij is lid van het External Editorial Board van het Amsterdam Museum Journal en bestuurslid van de Antropologen Beroepsvereniging.
